This is a serious review of the new cd ROOTED IN THE BLUES
Rooted in the Blues is an exhibit of Powers wallowing in a sea of creative blue bliss.
Michael leads the band with compelling passion.
This live cd recorded in Helsinki (NOT Finland) showcases a well rehearsed and genuinely aroused Powers.
Powers' electric guitar tone has evolved noticebly. There has been a clear increase in sophistication to a more uniquely mature sound. It sounds more delicate than lightning, but no less appealing. It is hard to describe..like a hot tube amplifier where the tubes are little pink lava lamps and the tone jumps out of the speaker and dances grinning in your face...if that helps...
Michael plays a lot of his old tricks, at least as a foundation, but fate evidently allowed Powers to learn a whole host of exciting new licks that he plays here with meticulous precision.
You will hear a tedious devotion to the blues in Michael's guitar as he plays from his heart. His immense virtues as a bluesman and as a spiritualist are further corroborated by his voices, which have baritone colors in Crawling King Snake key of A.
Track 6 could have been slightly stronger.
