About Me

I've enjoyed  touring and dancing on Broadway with such plays and musicals as "Bigger Than Bubble Gum" and Otis Salid Production to the Legendary "Dreamgirls".  I was nominated 2x for a Grammy Award with jazz CDs "FullSwing" and Dizzy Gilespie's "Closer To The Source".

Also, I have been honored to write with some of our most Blessed Musicians such as Hubert Laws and the late George Howard.

Now I feel just as blessed to have a chance to be on the same stage with the Legendary Michael Powers.   I hope that this is just the beginning of this wonderful learning experience.

Thanks Again

About Me

I'm 24-years-old.  I used to sit right up against the stage at terra-blues and watch Michael P. play guitar.  I went every monday night in '06-'07.  I had long hair and looked like a hippy; I used to play guitar all day long and pretend to be Hendrix.

Then one night after a gig, Michael was going down the stairs at Terra-Blues and told me about the Bible.  It totally changed my life and I am so thankful that he took a few minutes to share with me that he reads the Bible.

Because I thought Michael was the coolest person in world and I wanted to be just like him, I thought I would start reading the Bible to be more like him.  Well, I went from being a depressed, alcoholic- drug-addict, to a good man in a couple years.

Here is how it happened:

In 2007 I got the crazy, drug-induced idea to travel the country by sneaking on Greyhound busses and hopping freight trains.  I took nothing with me but what I could fit in my guitar case.  My purpose was to be a "real" blues-man who was in a different city every night playing guitar in whatever bar would let me play.  I usually didn't make any money so I would have to steal food and sleep outside on the ground.  I travelled all over the country, and in Febuary of '08, I hitchhiked from Omaha Neb. to Fairbanks Alaska.

My drug of choice was weed and I would smoke with whoever I could find that was willing to give me some for free.  Of course I spent thousands of dollars on it in my life, but thats another story.  In Orlando in July 2007, when I was 20, Demetrius, a young man, offered me some crack for free.  I said, "no way!"  However, I was already a little drunk, and he aggresively persuaded me to try it.  I thought, if I just try it once, nothing will happen to me, and I won't be curious anymore about what it is like to get stoned on crack.  Well, a few months later I was offered crack in Memphis and I accepted simply because I was stressed out and didn't think taking one hit would be a big deal.  You see, weed really is a gateway drug.  Anyway, the point is I was making bad decisions during this time in my life, and I was destined to destroy myself.

Thank God, I had remembered what Michael said about the Bible.  Somebody had given me a New Testament and I kept it in my guitar-case, reading it occasionally.  I did not have a conversion like St. Paul, where I fell of the horse and boom I was changed.  It was a gradual, slow change.  Every now and then when I was stuck on a freight train, or waiting for a Greyhound, I would dabble in my New Testament.

In '08 I became a father.  I was listening a lot to Michael's song, "You've Got to Go Down" and when he says, "You got to learn how to treat your family" I took that to mean that I would have a serious responsibility to do a good job raising my daughter.

When I saw her after she was born I new that she was God's gift to me, and that God was real.  I decided that my vocation in life was to be a good parent, primarily by modeling good behavior to my child.  I quit drugs, alcohol, smoking, etc, all the bad habits.  I began getting treatment for my depression and thinking-problems.

I started going to church on Sunday mornings.  Slowly but surely, I started to understand scripture.  I began feeling more secure.  I felt God's love washing over me in ways I never had as I started believing and trusting in him.

I'm not perfect today, but I'm happy.  I work 40-hours a week for a medical clinic, and I go to college at night.  I go to church 3-5 times a week and love it.  My daughter is more beautiful than I know how to describe with words.  I want to be a Catholic priest one day.

Sunday morning when I pray in church, I always take a moment to remember Michael P. and thank him for everything he has done for me, because he is the person that brought me into the church.

About Me

I was sentenced in Indiana to Life for murder at 23. I had two prior felony convictions in the same state. I became a political and educational leader in prison, completing a GED, developing an off-campus degree program and completing most of a baccalaureate degree, and negotiating everything from day-to-day inmate/inmate and inmate/staff disputes to a work stoppage protesting a gubernatorial election and an 18-hour hostage situation. By agreed settlement pursuant to a pro se post conviction relief petition, my charge was reduced to second degree murder, and the sentence reduced from Life to 15-25 years. I was released without parole in 1990, my 15th year of incarceration, and haven't been arrested in the 20 years since.

Unfortunately, my interest in Ms. Kruzan's case didn't begin until it came to my attention via a change.org petition in November, seeking commutation of her sentence to time served, which I signed.  Despite having been actively involved in prisoners rights matters during my incarceration, I refrained from further involvement after my release, because I worked for awhile as a juvenile corrections counselor in a private facility facility that contracted with the Department of Correction, and later worked as full-time faculty for Ball State University in numerous adult prisons in Indiana. However, the politics at the university are far pettier than anything I ever encountered in the Department of Correction, even among the inmates, and I was finally ousted several years ago. Hence, I'm now at liberty once again to become politically active on behalf of prisoners, and have only just recently begun to assert myself as a "free agent" in that endeavor once again.

Fortunately, it appears there's no need for me to do anything at all to further Ms. Kruzan's cause, as Governor Schwarzenegger, unlike some other governors past and present, had the moral courage to do the right thing in his final days in office. I commend his action, as well as those of key activists who have worked towards a just resolution to her case; the correctional professionals who have assisted her in the difficult business of rehabilitation and personal development; but most importantly, Ms. Kruzan herself, without whose perseverance, a worldful of doomsayers would have been proven right.
